In Palermo, at the end of the 19th century, a free voluntary society for the protection of both animals and children arose, assuming a completely unique name and purpose in Italy, since the other similar bodies had only the protection of animals as their purpose. In Sicily, utility animals were regularly abused and subjected to work beyond their concrete physical possibilities; and even children between the ages of 6 and 12 did not escape exploitation, subjected to grueling work in the sulfur mines and other factories. The Society developed three areas of intervention: the protection of animals, the protection of abandoned children, the educational commitment in schools. It received numerous contributions for its operation and was also awarded by the Minister of Education Guido Baccelli. It is an interesting story of suffering and an example of moral and social redemption, in which the school and many free Sicilian citizens were protagonists.
