Schmutterer, Felix (Author)
Carl Ritter (1779–1859) is considered to be one of the founding fathers of modern scientific geography. He understood geography as the science of "earthly space" - and human beings and their history as their integral parts. Felix Schmutterer takes Ritter's »Geography«, which appeared in 21 volumes between 1817 and 1859, as a starting point and examines the geographer's approach. He shows that Ritter always had areas such as historiography, archeology, ethnology and botany in mind. Ritter's handling of source texts - in addition to travel reports from contemporaries as well as ancient and medieval writings - bring him closer to historians. In his book, Schmutterer succeeds in shedding new light on the person Carl Ritter and the early years of scientific geography.
