Since ancient times, thermalism has maintained complex, ambivalent, even conflicting relations with medicine and health practices. By covering a geographical area integrating European and Mediterranean areas, this book questions a phenomenon that has a long history, but whose developments and characteristics are still often to be clarified. It aims to identify, from a diachronic perspective, the main trends in the development of hydrotherapy (both medical and recreational) and to highlight the difficulties that the study of the phenomenon raises.
