Since ancient times, thermalism has maintained complex, ambivalent, even conflicting relations with medicine and health practices. By covering a geographical area integrating European and Mediterranean areas, this book questions a phenomenon that has a long history, but whose developments and characteristics are still often to be clarified. It aims to identify, from a diachronic perspective, the main trends in the development of hydrotherapy (both medical and recreational) and to highlight the difficulties that the study of the phenomenon raises. The studies presented concern its main aspects (architectural, economic, political, cultural and medical) and are all based on a great wealth of documentary, textual and / or archaeological material
