L’entomoterapia è l’uso di Artropodi (in modo particolare Insetti) o di loro prodotti per la cura di varie malattie; affonda le sue radici nella notte dei tempi e si ritrova nelle tradizioni di molti paesi come parte integrante di quella che viene definita etnomedicina. Dell’entomoterapia fa parte la più conosciuta apiterapia, molto utilizzata anche nei paesi occidentali. Recentemente rimedi entomoterapici hanno iniziato ad essere sempre più considerati dalla medicina ufficiale e numerose sono le ricerche scientifiche effettuate su farmaci (specialmente derivati dalla medicina tradizionale cinese) che vedono come loro principale componente parti di insetti o loro prodotti. Tra questi, il veleno di varie specie ha, in modo particolare, attirato l’attenzione dei ricercatori e le sostanze con attività farmacologica che sono state ricavate da questa secrezione assommano a varie centinaia. Questo libro si propone di presentare un panorama, seppur limitato, delle pratiche entomoterapiche oggi in uso, con la speranza che le importanti indicazioni date dalla medicina tradizionale siano sempre più oggetto di approfondimento da parte della ricerca scientifica. Il milione e più di specie di Artropodi presenti sul nostro pianeta rappresenta, infatti, una fonte inesauribile di sostanze con attività farmacologica di cui si comincia, solo da poco, a comprendere le enormi potenzialità.
