Nella prima parte del volume si rielabora un lavoro del 1992 incentrato sul ruolo di Federigo Enriques nello sviluppo della filosofia della scienza sulla necessità di una storia più critica ed oggettiva di questa disciplina, ambito di studi consolidatosi in maniera autonoma a partire dai primi anni del XXI secolo con metodologie tipiche della cultural history a dirla con Michael Friedman. Esso, arricchito nella seconda parte di ulteriori scritti sul matematico livornese attraverso l’analisi di alcuni congressi internazionali degli anni ’30, ne riesamina il non secondario ruolo per aver messo al centro dei dibattiti epistemologici alcune cruciali questioni, come ad esempio la dinamica delle teorie con la necessità di una ‘nuova epistemologia dai fondamenti storici’ e la fondamentale idea di ‘pensiero scientifico’, temi non al centro di quella che poi sarebbe diventata la corrente Standard. Oltre a ridimensionare alcune interpretazioni del suo pensiero basate su un certo psicologismo ed un presunto continuismo storico, il volume ricostruisce il decisivo apporto a quel filone, unico nel suo genere, di philosophie mathématique che venne a svilupparsi in Francia, a partire dagli ultimi anni del XIX secolo, attraverso gli sviluppi critici avuti nelle opere di Albert Lautman (1908-1944), figura divenuta recentemente centrale in certi ambiti dell’attuale filosofia della matematica per averne già delineato le basi sulla sua scia di una ulteriore svolta. Enriched in the second part with further writings on the mathematician from Livorno through the analysis of some international congresses of the 1930s, the book re-examines the non-secondary role for having placed some crucial questions, such as the dynamics of theories, at the center of epistemological debates with the need for a 'new epistemology with historical foundations' and the fundamental idea of 'scientific thought'. In addition to reducing some interpretations of his thought based on a certain psychologism and a presumed historical continuity, the volume reconstructs the decisive contribution to that strand, unique in its kind, of "philosophie mathématique" which came to develop in France, starting from the last years of the Nineteenth century, through the critical developments in the works of Albert Lautman (1908-1944), a figure that has recently become central in certain areas of the current philosophy of mathematics for having already outlined its foundations in its wake of a further turning point.]
