(Page 4, introduction) (In two centuries, from the beginning of the Hundred Years' War to the Italian Wars, the cannon radically transformed the military art and changed the course of the history of European states. From the first thunderbolts, just good at projecting incendiary dashes, to the cannons of iron ball batteries, pulverizing in a few hours walls several meters thick, the history of the cannon in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is rich and varied, far from the epinal image of disproportionate and ineffective bombards. Renewing the history of medieval artillery, this book identifies the stages of this evolution, untangles the pitfalls of an abundant vocabulary (which is not the same, for example, for French royal artillery and Burgundian ducal artillery), and shows the impact of the new weapon on siege warfare, field warfare, and war at sea. This clarification will be invaluable to architectural historians seeking to understand the evolution of transitional fortification, to historians of the State wishing to measure the impact of the new weapon on the administrative structures of the modern States in the process of being constituted, and, in general, to all those who are passionate about the history of the Middle Ages or the Renaissance.)
