English: The Classification of Sciences in Count Barca’s Library Antônio de Araújo de Azevedo (1754-1817), Count Barca, had several positions in the Portuguese government, which he took profit to improve his knowledge on modern science and enlarge his personal library. In 1807 the library arrived to Brazil, where it continued to grow. Following the death of Count Barca, the library was put to the market, for which purpose a catalog was elaborated, currently deposited at the Brazilian National Library. In the present study I discuss the possible sources for the library’s catalog and reconstructed its bibliographical tree. Different from previous assertions, the results suggest that Count Barca’s books were not classified following Jean Garnier. Relative to the broadest categories, Jacques C. Brunet’s classification seems to be the closest one. One should bear in mind that this was a time of transition, along which some branches of science disappeared from the tree of knowledge, while others, corresponding to new specializations, emerged. Therefore, one could not expect to find one single model of classification. In any case, Count Barca’s library and its classification do not only represent the contemporary thought, but also of the individuals who made use of the books.
