Leafing through Nature. The Herbarium Centrale Italicum (HCI) Established in 1842 by the Botanist Filippo Parlatore (2020)

unapi

This paper is a reconstruction of the reasons which prompted the Sicilian botanist Filippo Parlatore to found the HCI in Florence and the role that this had for Italian botanical studies. It will then bring to light the ways in which the HCI grew to become one of the most important herbaria in Europe, thanks to contributions from the entire Italian and European botanical community. It will show how, as a result of these contributions, only a few years after its establishment, the Herbarium was already so comprehensive that it became a fundamental instrument for Parlatore in the publication of his Flora italiana, the first botanical compendium of Italian plants based on the natural system of classification. Moreover, the HCI was also indispensable for Parlatore’s studies in botanical geography, the discipline conceived by the great Prussian explorer-scientist Alexander von Humboldt on his return from his travels in Tropical America (1799-1804), and systematized by other naturalists, among them the Swiss botanist Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle and his son Alphonse.
