Notizie sulla farmacia dell'Ospedale di Santa Maria della Morte di Bologna, oggi Farmacia del Pavaglione (2019)

In 1336, the Confraternity of Santa Maria della Morte was born in Bologna, its purpose was to assist prisoners, especially those condemned to death. The hospital activity was one of the main missions of this confraternity, this is why the confreres built a new hospital in Bologna. In the oldest existing document of the Confraternity (1393) we find some apothecaries registered. In this research I also found a document about the sale of pharmacy furniture dated 1336. Unfortunately, it is not specified if the furniture was owned by the Confraternity of Death, anyway the presence of this document in the hospital archive suggests a possible link between this pharmacy furniture and the confraternity. On 2 June 1801, the Hospital of Death was joined to the Hospital of Life of Bologna: the new hospital was called Grande Spedale della Vita e della Morte. Despite the union of the hospitals in a new one, the Pharmacy of Life (inside the new hospital) and the Pharmacy of Death (in the ancient building of the Hospital of Death) were not joined, but the Pharmacy of Death became a community pharmacy. The new set of pharmacy vases commissioned by the Hospital Administration in the early XIXth century, where the coats of arms of both Confraternities of Life and Death are represented, is also really interesting because it is quite different from the one chosen by the Hospital Administration for the new Grande Spedale. The new coat of arm chosen by the Hospital Administration represents two crosses (one symbol of the Confraternity of Life and one of the Confraternity of Death) crossed between them and tied by a ribbon. The coat of arms is different in the vases, because we find the seals of the two ancient confraternities side by side: this represents that despite the union of the two hospitals there still existed two different pharmacies. In 1861, the pharmacy was run by the Veratti family, direct descendants of Laura Bassi Veratti, first female university professor in the world. This pharmacy is still active today, but it changed name in 1923 to Farmacia del Pavaglione.
