Little industrial archaeology has taken place in urban settings in Arizona. Recent excavations and archival research have resulted in the recovery of information on the first gas plant in Phoenix. In a state where racism against Asian-born men was rampant, a Japanese entrepreneur, Hutchlon Ohnick, successfully organized and constructed the plant. The gas provided by the plant lit exterior and interior lights and symbolized the transition of the community from a rough western community to a city emulating its eastern counterparts.
