Tempo delle miniere e tempo dei minatori nelle Alpi orobiche valtellinesi. Un patrimonio culturale secolare tra fonti storiche e dati archeologici (2022)
The article provides an overview of iron-working in areas of the Bergamesque Alps in Valtellina during the Middle Ages, using well-known historical data and combining it with the scarce archaeological sources that have confirmed the existence of metallurgical activities among the community of Sondrio, albeit in a context outside the city walls. During the Middle Ages, a multifunctional workshop was established in a non-urbanised setting that was capable of undertaking a range of productive activities, including iron-working. The discovery of a horseshoe during the excavation of this productive site suggests that the workshop could meet the requirements of mule drivers who travelled up to the Alpine passes from Sondrio and needed to shoe the transport animals that they brought with them. The study examines the whole production chain linked to iron mining and the transformation phases culminating in the conversion of raw material to tools used in everyday life. In the case of areas of the Bergamesque Alps in Valtellina, the story continues until the phase preceding industrialisation. The failure to convert local metalworking activities to coal-based production, which had become widespread in Belgium, Germany and England with significantly lower final costs, led to productive involution, even in areas of Valtellina where metalworking tended to follow the rhythms and timescale of the past and was unable to compete with innovations in European metallurgy.
