La capacité de préparer des sérums et des vaccins capables de guérir ou d’immuniser les êtres humains était affichée par les bactériologistes de la fin du xix e siècle comme l’un des principaux acquis de la « révolution microbienne ». Toutefois, les difficultés rencontrées pour développer un produit thérapeutique allongeaient le chemin conduisant de sa conception à la standardisation et utilisation à grande échelle. Ce décalage est bien illustré par l’analyse de la trajectoire du sérum antipesteux, conçu entre 1894 et 1895 à l’Institut Pasteur. La difficulté majeure ayant ralenti sa standardisation tient à des essais pratiqués en Inde – et non en France – lors des épidémies de peste bubonique de 1897 et 1898. L’analyse des lettres et des cahiers de terrain des deux chercheurs responsables des essais, Alexandre Yersin et Paul Simond, révèle leurs stratégies et les relations qu’ils durent nouer avec les acteurs locaux pour parvenir à leurs fins. Elle dévoile également la compétition et les controverses inévitables ayant opposé Yersin et Simond à d’autres chercheurs européens désireux de tester leurs propres produits en Inde.
