The transmission of scientific, technical and medical knowledge between Europe and Asia has been the subject of several historical studies during the past decades. The complexity of the transmission process which involves cross-cultural interactions, the encounter of essentially different traditions and practices, the contexts of diffusion and reception, the center-periphery relationship and many other intriguing issues, has ensured that the theme has remained a highly fertile field of research for many scholars and continues to capture the attention of inquisitive minds. While scholarly attention focused on the diverse means by which knowledge diffused outside Europe and to the process of its introduction, attempts to understand the adoption of the transmitted knowledge and its adaptation to its new habitat were also undertaken. Was the newly received technical knowledge used in its original form or implemented within the framework of traditional technology or practice, or did it undergo some transformations?
