La découverte du caractère pesant de l’air et de la loi régissant son élasticité au milieu du XVIIe siècle fait passer l’atmosphère du statut de concept purement mathématique à celui de système physique complexe. Sa nature fait l’objet de nombreuses hypothèses que les savants du XVIIIe siècle tentent d’intégrer au sein d’une représentation globalement cohérente impliquant diverses matières invisibles, dites « subtiles ».Cet ouvrage examine les estimations contradictoires de la hauteur de l’atmosphère faites à l’époque sur la base des observations de certains météores et de la lumière des astres réfractée et réfléchie à sa traversée, et caractérise les matières subtiles invoquées pour expliquer ces observations, en replaçant l’ensemble dans le contexte naissant de la nouvelle philosophie expérimentale.Adoptant comme fil rouge l’interrogation sur la hauteur de l’atmosphère Physique de l’environnement terrestre, matières subtiles et hauteur de l’atmosphère retrace l’histoire de la découverte de l’atmosphère et des nombreux questionnements auxquels elle a donné lieu. The discovery of the heavy nature of air and the law governing its elasticity in the middle of the 17th century took the atmosphere from the status of a purely mathematical concept to that of a complex physical system. Its nature is the subject of numerous hypotheses that 18th century scientists attempted to integrate into a globally coherent representation involving various invisible, so-called “subtle” materials. This work examines the contradictory estimates of the height of the atmosphere. made at the time on the basis of observations of certain meteors and the light of the stars refracted and reflected as it crossed, and characterizes the subtle matters invoked to explain these observations, placing the whole in the emerging context of the new philosophy experimental.Adopting as a common thread the questioning of the height of the atmosphere Physics of the terrestrial environment, subtle materials and height of the atmosphere traces the history of the discovery of the atmosphere and the numerous questions to which it gave rise place.
