The discovery of the heavy nature of air and the law governing its elasticity in the middle of the 17th century took the atmosphere from the status of a purely mathematical concept to that of a complex physical system. Its nature is the subject of numerous hypotheses that 18th century scientists attempted to integrate into a globally coherent representation involving various invisible, so-called “subtle” materials. This work examines the contradictory estimates of the height of the atmosphere. made at the time on the basis of observations of certain meteors and the light of the stars refracted and reflected as it crossed, and characterizes the subtle matters invoked to explain these observations, placing the whole in the emerging context of the new philosophy experimental.Adopting as a common thread the questioning of the height of the atmosphere Physics of the terrestrial environment, subtle materials and height of the atmosphere traces the history of the discovery of the atmosphere and the numerous questions to which it gave rise place.
