L’opera Natürliche Schöpfungsgeschichte, qui presentata in traduzione, fu redatta dallo zoologo tedesco Ernst Haeckel sulla base della trascrizione di un ciclo di lezioni tenute all’Università di Jena nel semestre invernale 1867-1868, rivolte a un pubblico non specializzato. Qui Haeckel riprende, in un linguaggio piano e semplice, le tesi espresse nella Generelle Morphologie der Organismen, opera poderosa, pubblicata in due volumi nel 1866. Un brillante riassunto divulgativo, sul quale lo stesso Darwin espresse il proprio apprezzamento nell’introduzione al The Descent of Man (1871) e che vantò ben undici edizioni e numerose traduzioni, fra le quali la meritevole traduzione in lingua italiana del 1892, curata da Daniele Rosa e con prefazione di Michele Lessona. Il presente volume propone una nuova traduzione italiana della prima parte dell’opera (costituita da quindici conferenze), dedicata al confronto con noti pensatori e scienziati dell’epoca e, in particolare, con coloro che Haeckel definisce i “padri fondatori della teoria della discendenza”: Darwin, Goethe e Lamarck.
