«Why do massages produce flesh?». A case of textual reuse in the Aristotelian Natural Problems (37.3) (2020)

unapi

The link between Aristotelian natural philosophy and ancient medical theory (including, but not restricted to, Hippocratic medicine) is traceable throughout the thirty-eight ‘books’ that constitute the "Problems." Structurally, the concentration of medical topics is highest in the initial "Problems" sections (Pr. 1-11) and the final eight (Pr. 31-38). The final sections often reiterate chapters from earlier sections (particularly Pr. 1-11) and are therefore seminal to our understanding of how medicine is dealt with in the Problems as a whole. The chapters on massage treated in book 37 will be of specific interest here, and more precisely how some of their contents recur in previous sections and what this may tell us about the redaction process of the Problems as a whole. The analysis comes in the form of a case-study of Pr. 37.3, which asks «Why do massages produce flesh?».
