For those involved in industrial archeology, an understanding of the history of the industry being documented is essential if the evidence is to be correctly interpreted and placed in a wider historical context. In the case of historic bridges, one can approach their history by considering the development of structural systems that optimize the properties of the materials used. Such a perspective provides a direct link with the artifact and the history of particular bridge types and materials. Thus, the emphasis in this article is to illustrate the development of structural forms for historic American bridges. The article can be considered only an introduction to the subject of material properties and resulting optimum forms.
