The Canadian Parks Service (formerly Parks Canada) has become involved in the field of industrial heritage commemoration through the department's mandate, exercised by the minister on the recommendation of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, to commemorate historic sites deemed of national importance. From the outset in 1919, Canada's industrial heritage was recognized as coming within the Parks' mandate, but the approach to its commemoration has evolved through three distinct phases in keeping with changes in the board's outlook and the supporting resources and program emphasis of the Parks Service. Today, the Canadian Parks Service is committed to commemorating the historic "built environment," including industrial monuments, through plaquing and a selective presentation and interpretation of designated historic resources in natural historic sites. In this endeavor a distinct historical approach to industrial heritage commemoration has evolved that both comprehends and transcends the traditional industrial archeology approach to both the recording and study of industrial monuments.
