An Insight into al-Razi’s Extraordinary Theoretical and Practical Contributions for Developing Arthrology (2016)

unapi

Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariyā Rāzī (250 AH/864 AD-311 AH/923 AD), known as al-Razi, or Rhazes in the West, and often referred to as “the Galen of the Arabs,”1 has been considered one of the most important and famous doctors throughout the ages since his lifetime. He has been referred to as “the Physician par excellence of the Muslims”2 and the “Learned Master (Allamah) of the Sciences of the Ancients.”3 He was a physician, philosopher, and a chemist. In medicine, his contributions were so significant that they can only be compared to those of Ibn Sina (Avicenna).4 He was taught by a number of teachers from Khurasan: al-Nishaburi,5 Abu Zayd al-Balkhi,6 and Ali ibn Rabban al-Tabari.7 He made a thorough study of medical practice in the hospitals of Rayy and Baghdad, finally achieving the rank of director of the largest hospital (al-Bimaristan al-Aodedi) in Baghdad and also becoming a court physician. al-Razi was renowned across the Indian Ocean world. He debated with many outstanding personalities of his time. He discussed metaphysics and the problem of time with Abu al-Qasim al-Ka’bi al-Balkhi;8 the question of the preexistence of matter with Ahmad ibn aI-Hasan al-Masma’i;9 the validity of medicine with Abu aI-Abbas al-Nashi al-Akbar;10 the problem of pleasure with Abu aI-Hasan Shahid ibn al-Husayn al-Balkhi;11 that of bitter tastes with Ahmad ibn Muhammad Abu Tayyib al-Sarakhsi;12 and the question of the inanimate with Ahmad ibn Kayyal.13
