This paper shows that there were four major stages in the career of Mei Wending, a specialist in the mathematical sciences, and goes on to analyse how these stages where shaped by certain features of the early Qing state and society. These included the civil examination system, imperial patronage of learning (which was itself emulated by high officials) as well as these officials’ geographical mobility. The links between certain characteristics of the sites of knowledge where Mei lived, on the one hand, and the production and circulation of his many treatises are highlighted, on the other hand, so as to show how he was finally recognized as “a great mathematician and astronomer” just at the time when the disciplines in which he specialized were gaining the status of scholarly learning.
