Magia e chirofisonomia nel panorama della Controriforma: Pompeo Sarnelli e il recupero di Giovan Battista Della Porta (2016)

The article proposes an analysis of the contribution given by Pompeo Sarnelli, a bishop and Apulian erudite who lived between the 17th and 18th centuries, to the rehabilitation of the figure of Giovan Battista Della Porta, a Neapolitan scientist who worked between the 15th and 16th centuries. This paper highlights Sarnelli’s and Della Porta’s opinions about natural magic and chiromancy. Though Sarnelli was an ecclesiastic, he spent a great part of his life studying disciplines which are not strictly theological, such as epigraphy, history and literature. On the other hand, Della Porta’s writings were often deemed as quite controversial by the Catholic church. Nonetheless, Sarnelli recovered the chiromantic work written by Della Porta, who had never published it himself because of the lack of a printing license. In the end, Sarnelli managed to publish it by making changes in the text and introducing topics that were deemed interesting at the time.
