Bien qu'il soit doté d'un climat réputé sain, le Canada n'est pas exempt de maladies. Certaines, comme la petite vérole (variole), le typhus, la rougeole ou la grippe, ont entraîné des épidémies meurtrières. Dès le XVIIe siècle, des hôtels-Dieu, hôpitaux généraux dirigés par l'Église, commencent à s'établir en Nouvelle-France. Entité abstraite envoyée par Dieu pour éprouver l'homme ou le punir de ses péchés, la maladie est généralement perçue comme un déséquilibre des humeurs. Les savoirs sont donc aussi limités que les moyens d'intervention.
