As práticas astrológicas em Portugal (2021)

unapi

Astrological practices are an important aspect of the Early Modern Portuguese history. Astrology was present in many aspects of culture: debated by kings and princes, practiced by court physicians, and used in political and military decisions. Despite the Church regulations through the bull of 1586 and 1631, the Early Modern period is a moment of growth of astrological practices. In Portugal it is possible to study its history, practitioners and circulation, which are similar to that of other European kingdoms. All the major political events of this time are accompanied by astrological discourse, and in the field of culture, astrology is present in the plays of Gil Vicente, and in the writing of Luís de Camões. The end of the second dynasty was studied by astrologers, and the Restauration of 1640 was also legitimised by astrological discussions. It was circulated in almanacs and reportorios throughout the 16th and 17th centuries; it was taught in the Jesuit College of Santo Antão alongside disciplines such as mathematics, astronomy and navigation. By the late 17th century astrological practice began to decline being excluded from the field of the sciences by Enlightenment thinkers. This paper provides an outline of Portuguese historiography on astrology and offers an overview of its practice from the late 15th to the early 18th centuries.
