This study of how ‘geography’ was labelled in the nineteenth century, particularly from 1860 to 1914, analyses the variety of linguistic configurations in which this order of knowledge was situated in teaching and research debates in France, and in international congresses. The article shows both how geography was persistentlly qualified as a plural and indeterminate science, and the new labelling introduced to distinguish advocates and detractors of geographical dualism from those adhering to a geography without qualifiers, or championing a persistence of qualifiers. The discussions surrounding the collective movement to make geography into a discipline are shown to be influenced by question of teaching and by many transnational interactions.
