This article sets out to illustrate the results of a preliminary investigation into the water networks of Montefiascone, by means of a study of documentary sources and archaeological sources, as identified by fieldwork visits to the aqueducts that can be visited today, such as those of S. Flaviano and Il Castagno. The oldest written source is a literary work by an anonymous author dating to a period between the end of the 13th century and the start of the 14th, entitled Questioni Filosofiche. The work mentions the city’s underground water channels. Other sources include chapters from the Comunal Statuti (“Statutes”) compiled in 1471 and 1584, containing norms governing the maintenance and safe protection of aqueducts. By cross-referring archaeological sources (traces of digging work, and negative elements) and written sources, we have been able to identify a period of greater use as of the late medieval period, where the system does not exhibit cases of older features being reused. Furthermore, with particular reference to the S. Flaviano aqueduct, built interventions have been identified belonging to the medieval and modern periods. Finally, the close relationship between the route of the water networks and the two urban centres (Borgo di S. Flaviano, and the nucleus gravitating around Rocca dei Papi), dating as far back as the 9th century, reinforces the view that the aqueducts can mostly be dated to a phase later than the Classical era.
