Nell'Italia post-unitaria di fine Ottocento, i matematici molisani Achille Sànnia (1822–1892), Enrico D’Ovidio (1843–1933) e Giulio Pittarelli (1852–1934) ebbero a cuore l’insegnamento della matematica nei Licei e negli Istituti Tecnici. Sànnia e D'Ovidio pubblicarono un testo di Geometria che ebbe numerose edizioni dal 1869 al 1918, e Pittarelli fu autore di prove d’esame per gli Istituti Tecnici che gli venivano chieste dal Ministero.
