HSS Virtual Forum: Futures Series (2021)

unapi

Throughout the spring and summer of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic halted travel, closed national borders, and made large in-person gatherings impossible (among other effects). Faced with the knowledge that the planned annual meeting in New Orleans could not proceed, the HSS leadership pivoted to plan the completely online Virtual Forum.1 Planning for this digital gathering was animated by a sense that, given the circumstances, it was especially important for conversations at the Virtual Forum to reflect the material realities of the Society’s members. After an initial conversation between the HSS Executive Council and the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, a series of events titled “HSS Futures” was organized to address several interlocking issues we are facing as a Society and as a discipline. The first session was based on the Isis “Open Conversations” section “Diversifying the Discipline or Disciplining Diversity?” The contributors came together to discuss important matters about demographic data collection. The second session, organized by the co-chairs of the Graduate and Early Career Caucus and the co-chairs of the Women’s Caucus, discussed the future of the profession and the impact of the pandemic, especially on early career scholars. The third roundtable, organized on behalf of the HSS Executive Committee and the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, focused on the Society itself. This report summarizes the conversations that took place, introduces the context behind the sessions, and poses additional points, in the hope that the conversation will continue from this point onward.
