Changes in and Influence of the Images in the Bencao Yuanshi (2015)

unapi

The Bencao Yuanshi(Origins of materia medica) is a sophisticated illustrated medical work of the late Ming Dynasty. Its images are characterized by some new ideas in the use of partial images, profiles, methods of annotation and image composition, though the concepts of drawing changed little. This work was widespread in the Ming and Qing dynasties, when private printing workshops, especially those of the Zhou family, were important in its transmission. However, this transmission also resulted in the steady loss of useful information about the image. Some other material medica works were influenced by its style, though they largely copied its images, and were unable to escape from Li Zhongli’s stereotypes.
