[Abstract translated by DeepL Translator: This is the abstract in English… This text is the Translator's Preliminary Discourse, contained in Peter Shaw, "Leçons de chymie, propres à perfectionner la physique, le commerce et les arts," Paris, Jean-Thomas Hérissant, 1759. In fact, Thiroux d'Arconville (who does not sign herself by choice, as she will do in every one of her writings so as not to reveal that she is a woman) does much more than translate Shaw's text. She not only intervenes and corrects the author, but more importantly she offers a dictation that stands as a true original work that can be disengaged, without any problem, from Shaw's text. The Discourse is in fact a true genealogy of Chemistry, a great page in the History of Science, a fine-tuning of the structures, conditions and method that hold up the discourse on chemistry as a science in its own right, freed from the clutches of alchemy, and no longer an appendage of physics and medicine.]
