The Value of Counterfactual Analysis: Investigating Social and Technological Structure (2014)

Are counterfactuals only useful for highlighting contingency? This article suggests that historians might find counterfactuals even more helpful for revisiting the question of structure in the history of technology, and for challenging the analytical limits that our fears of technological determinism have produced.
