In a letter sent by Cardinal Bellarmino to Paolo Antonio Foscarini on April 12, 1615, the great Inquisitor asserts that biblical cosmology is also a matter of faith, because it is the Holy Spirit who speaks in the Scriptures. The Copernican doctrine is therefore to be considered as heretical. It is important to emphasize that what is at stake here is not just the interpretation of the Bible, but also the hierarchy of scholastic disciplines, and - therefore - the intellectual hegemony of religion in Italian society. In fact, acknowledging heliocentrism does not just undermine the foundations of Aristotelianism: it also implies the acknowledgement of the autonomy of the new science promoted by Galileo.
