Hydrostatics and Pneumatics in Antiquity (2016)

unapi

In this chapter we analyze how the science of hydrostatics and pneumatics emerged in antiquity, and how the framework of these disciplines relate to the accumulation of practical knowledge. After an overview of the technical achievements in both areas, covering the Mediterranean region and addressing literary and archeological evidence, we show the process of establishing both these theoretical disciplines in relation to the production and diffusion of technical artifacts. Finally, we conclude by investigating why the sources show lively theoretical discussions in the Greek east (sixth to third centuries BCE), whereas the most relevant technological developments happened during the Roman Imperial era in the Latin world (first to third centuries CE).
