Philipp Ostens Buch schildert die Umstände, unter denen der Schlaf nach 1800 zum Objekt wissenschaftlichen Interesses und zum Faszinosum der Literaten wurde. Bei seinen Recherchen stieß der Autor auf bislang unveröffentlichte Quellen aus dem Königreich Württemberg, die über medizinische Untersuchungen und Experimente an sogenannten Somnambulen berichten, denen zum Teil hellseherische Fähigkeiten zugeschrieben wurden. Das Selbstzeugnis einer 17-jährigen Probandin offenbart, welche Nähe die wissenschaftlichen Deutungen der Hofärzte zu tief im Volksglauben verankerten Vorstellungen aufwiesen. Darüber hinaus geht der Autor der Frage nach, inwiefern die Alltagskultur des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts von den damaligen medizinischen Schlaftheorien und von der Vorstellung einer Analogie von Schlaf und Tod geprägt war. Und er führt seine Leser an jene Epochengrenze, hinter der an die Stelle philosophischer Theorien über die Seele und ihre verschiedenen Zustände disziplinierende Regeln traten, die darauf zielten, den Schlaf vor allem als Mittel zum Erhalt der Leistungs- und Arbeitsfähigkeit anzusehen.
