Reappraising Robert Val Guthrie's Even the rat was White (1976, 2003) (2020)

This past spring, we began discussing a new kind of book review for Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences: The “Reappraisal Review.” We conceived the Reappraisal Review as a reassessment of a work that has had a significant and/or sustained impact on the field. We envisioned inviting reviewers to revisit a particular work, and reconsider its ongoing relevance, importance, and potential for helping us think anew about a particular topic in the social and behavioral sciences. This type of review, we thought, was in keeping with JHBS's longstanding commitment to producing and reviewing historical scholarship. As this idea began to take shape, the global pandemic of 2020 unfolded and social unrest erupted, including protests against anti‐Blackness, systemic racism, and police brutality. In the grip of this, and in thinking about the kind of book that has had a significant and sustained impact, we immediately thought of Dr. Robert Val Guthrie's Even the rat was White: A historical view of psychology (first edition 1976, second edition 2003) for our first Reappraisal Review. And rather than offering one perspective on this important book, we wanted to offer a collection of reviews, revisiting Guthrie's scholarship from a variety of contemporary standpoints, written by both Black and White scholars whom his work has impacted. We are delighted to offer five such reviews, and are most grateful to Layli Maparyan, Shari E. Miles‐Cohen, Bedford E. F. Palmer II, Martin Summers, and Andrew S. Winston, for graciously accepting our invitation to write these reflections at relatively short notice, and in the midst of a disquieting, unsettling, time.
