In many instances over the course of centuries, the impetus for industrial productivity and/or profitability has resulted in hazardous working conditions. Silicosis, an irreversible and often progressive disease of the lung caused by the inhalation of respirable particles of free crystalline silica, illustrates this connection. Respirable siliceous dust has been the pathogen common to mining, quarrying, stone working, flint knapping, pottery manufacture, founding, and use of abrasives. Recognition of this association has led to extensive modifications of industrial processes and practices so as to mitigate the risk of silicosis.
