The aphoristic sentences in the Hippocratic treatise On Affections (2020)

unapi

The Hippocratic treatise "Aphorisms" is arguably the most commented upon, translated and published work linked to the name of Hippocrates. One of the results of the success and spread of this medical book was that a whole literary genre, not necessarily of medical content, was named after it. Nevertheless, no comprehensive study on the aphoristic works of the Hippocratic Collection exists, and the scarcity of studies devoted to some of these early medical treatises such as "Coan Prognoses" or "Prorrhetic 1" is surprising. This paper deals with issues such as the scope and intended audience of the medical aphoristic genre and analyses the aphoristic material present in the Hippocratic treatise "On Affections." The medical knowledge transmitted in these sentences appears to have no parallel in other Hippocratic works, and the author appears as a compiler who collects material from different sources and doctrines so as to cover as much content as possible.
