Mettant en lumière l'importance de ses recherches dans le domaine de la neurologie, Freud, du regard à l'écoute s'attache à faire redécouvrir l'invention de la psychanalyse et son développement au-delà du cercle viennois, puis son impact sur le surréalisme alors même qu'elle se construit dans le refus de l'image, s'épanouissant dans les associations de mots et l'écoute en l'absence de toute représentation visuelle : le lisible contre le visible, le mot contre l'image. Au fil de la carrière du médecin viennois, l'ouvrage met aussi en évidence sa dette à l'égard du judaïsme, car si Freud lui-même se définit comme un «juif tout à fait sans Dieu» et souhaite défendre le caractère universel de la psychanalyse, sa pensée demeure profondément redevable à la tradition interprétative propre au judaïsme. Highlighting the importance of his research in the field of neurology, Freud, from looking at listening, endeavors to rediscover the invention of psychoanalysis and its development beyond the Viennese circle, then its impact on surrealism even as it is constructed in the rejection of the image, flourishing in associations of words and listening in the absence of any visual representation: the legible against the visible, the word against the image . Throughout the career of the Viennese doctor, the work also highlights his debt to Judaism.
