Conspicuous Consumption and Outward Opulence as Seen in Two Victorian-Period Colorado Midden Assemblages (2022)

unapi

Recent excavations in western Colorado Springs recovered a variety of discarded items dating to the Victorian period. The excavations occurred at the Glen Eyrie middens, and the recovered artifacts provide evidence of the wealth and outward opulence associated with the Glen Eyrie Estate occupied by railroad magnate General William Jackson Palmer, his family, and estate staff. Specifically, the artifacts from the Glen Eyrie Estate reflect temporal and social patterns and purchasing power. These findings are supported using historical documents to provide a more complex interpretation of recovered cultural materials. The results of the excavations suggest that the Palmer family set the standard for wealth and societal norms in Colorado and the Intermountain West, emulating some of the core values of the Victorian period—conspicuous consumption being chief among them.
