This article examines the prophetic movement of Alinesitoué Diatta, focusing on her teachings related to Diola agriculture and French colonial development plans. By looking at her teachings in relation to rice agriculture and French support of a new cash crop, peanuts, one can see both the religious significance of agriculture in Diola society and the importance of religious sources of indigenous knowledge about agricultural innovations. Her opposition to Vichy French agricultural initiatives contributed to their decision to arrest and exile her to Timbuctou, where she died of scurvy within a year of her deportation.
