In 1773, Paris was shaken by the fear that soon a comet would have caused the end of the world: reason of the panic was the Mémoire sur les Comètes by Jérôme Lalande. In his essay, intended for a séance of the Académie, the astronomer analyzed the probability of collision between Earth and comets, although not announcing any catastrophe. The occurrence forced scientists and literary men to deal with two issues of particular urgency: the problem, on the one hand, of the possibility or impossibility of cosmic impacts, linked to the reflections about the Cosmos and the Divine Providence; on the other hand, the emergence of a debate on how to communicate probabilistic values to the public.
