In his monumental Science and Civilisation in China, Joseph Needham focuses on mathematics in subsections (a) to (k) of section 19 in volume III. After evaluating the characteristics and contributions of ancient Chinese mathematics, Needham turns in the tenth subsection: (j) Influences and Transmissions. Here, he writes, “When, however, we ask what mathematical ideas seem to have radiated from China southwards and westwards, we found a quite considerable list.” ([Needham 1959], 146) Below we have compiled Needham’s “quite considerable list” in the form of a concise table.
