It is projected that about 5 zettabytes (or 10 21 bits) of digital data are being generated each year by everything from retail transactions to underground physics experiments to global positioning systems to the “Internet of Things.” In the United States, public and private sector programs are being funded to deal with Big Data in all five sectors of the economy—services, manufacturing, construction, agriculture, and mining. This article presents an overview and analysis of Big Data from a US perspective.
