Teodoro de Almeida (1722‑1804) ou a arte da recreação (2021)

unapi

Teodoro de Almeida (1722-1804) was an Oratorian priest and natural philosopher whose works marked the Portuguese Enlightenment. Teaching, public lectures and printing were the main vehicles Almeida used to deliver his accounts of natural phenomena and the advancement of experimental philosophy. His main work concerning the popularisation of natural philosophy was the ten-volume Philosophical recreation or Dialogue on natural philosophy, for the instruction of curious people who could not attend classes, published between 1751 and 1800. In this chapter, I approach Philosophical recreation as an instance of the process of appropriation of modern natural philosophy in 18th-century Portugal, a Catholic and peripheral country. The author analyses the relationship between science and religion and the fact that Almeida used the same rhetorical devices as some Protestant natural philosophers to fight against attacks on religious orthodoxy. Finally, I address the social profile of the audiences of Philosophical recreation and the editorial achievements of some of Almeida’s works.
