We can find several characteristics of Native Korean Herbal Medicine in the Preface of Compendium of People-Saving Prescriptions Made with Native Korean Herbs (Hyangyak Chesaeng Chipsŏngbang 鄕藥濟生集成方). First, it clarifies that saving people through medicine is part of the Neo-Confucianist ideal of ruling. Second, it emphasises that Korea’s medical tradition treats one disease with one herb, making it highly effective. Third, it points out that Korea is geographically different from China, and that treating disease with native Korean herbs has a faster and better effect than using foreign herbs. The geographic concept of Native Korean Herbal Medicine was inherited by the Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine (Tongŭi Pogam 東醫寶鑑) and had been the core idea of Chosŏn medicine until the early twentieth century.
