Anne Cannon Palumbo (Author)
The Philadelphia-born illustrator and printmaker Joseph Pennell was one of the first artists to derive inspiration from the industrial landscape of the United States. After almost three decades spent in portraying the rich architectural heritage of Europe, he suddenly transferred his attention to the subject of industry. In his hands factories and other industrial structures took on the impressive grandeur and cultural significance of the cathedral, a vision that helped to give industry aesthetic respectability.
