In this paper we discuss in detail the concepts of (i) the deśāntara correction to the mean longitude of a heavenly body, and (ii) the linear distance, called yojana. We consider the definitions and procedures given in classical Indian astronomical texts like the rybhaṭīyam, Brāhmasphutasiddhānta, Khandakhādyaka, Laghu- Mahā- Bhāskarīya, Siddhānta Śiromani, GrahalĀghavam and Tantrasangraha. From our findings we notice that there were apparently two distinct schools (paksas), which were led by Ārybhata (b. CE 476) and Brahmagupta (ca. 628), who used 1050 and 1581 yojana, respectively, for the diameter of the Earth.
