I cosmetici in farmacia all’inizio del Novecento (2021)

unapi

The formula of the Hippocratic ointment based on oil and wax was the first cosmetic prepared by the apothecaries for the care and embellishment of the skin. In the course of time many authors endeavored to study suitable means to satisfy the desire for seduction of ladies and knights, but it is necessary to wait until the seventeenth century to see inserted in an official Pharmacopoeia the Antidotario Mediolanense, a chapter of one hundred pages with the best formulas to prepare lotions, creams, perfumes and lipsticks, opening the world of luxury to the apothecaries. A significant increase in the field took place in the nineteenth century, with the arrival of new excipients and synthetic essences. The Parisian chemist R. Cerbelaud will be very successful with a manual of over 600 pages that brings to the chemists’ knowledge the materials and methods by which the first firms of the field worked. Although only the simplest preparations were imitated, the initiative of the best pharmacies was widely rewarded thanks to the best prices they could make for the most famous foreign companies.
