In 1988, scientists and technologists from the Unilever Research Laboratory Vlaardingen published the booklet Biotechnology: From science to shopping. In it, they outlined how the New Biotechnology - adapting or modifying genetic material - could be used for Unilever products. The impetus for this New Biotechnology took place from the 1970s, particularly in American university laboratories. The New Biotech meanwhile as an important economic innovation.
