[Abstract translated by Google Translate: This is the abstract in English… This volume reconstructs the history of birth in the West from the ancient world to the present day, analyzing the most significant changes and intersections: the foundation of the medical-scientific discourse in ancient Greece, the turning point impressed by Christianity, the emergence of the figure of surgeon-obstetrician in the eighteenth century, the medicalization of childbirth, until the revolution of the twentieth century reproductive technologies. In an exciting journey, the book retraces a story that is anything but linear, progressive or homogeneous; full of permanences, as well as transformations; of confrontations, clashes, conflicts. The choice to keep together "generation, pregnancy-birth and birth" expresses the intent to focus the event in its entirety and to consider all the subjects involved, whose role and relevance change in relation to the forms of representation, resulting in crucial in conditioning deontological practices and principles. History is investigated in its many cultural, social and religious facets, from which descend rituals and therapeutic practices, religious and civil norms, forms of power and discipline of the female body. In this perspective, a crucial chapter of cultural, social and gender history is revealed, a fundamental observatory for women's history, as well as an indispensable tool for understanding the complex reality of the present.]
