Questo volume ricostruisce la storia del parto e della nascita in Occidente dal mondo antico ai nostri giorni, analizzandone gli snodi e i cambiamenti più significativi: la fondazione del discorso medico-scientifico nella Grecia antica, la svolta impressa dal cristianesimo, l’affermarsi della figura del chirurgo-ostetrico nel Settecento, la medicalizzazione del parto, fino alla rivoluzione delle tecnologie riproduttive del Novecento. In un percorso appassionante ripercorre una storia tutt’altro che lineare, progressiva od omogenea; densa di permanenze, oltre che di trasformazioni; di confronti, scontri, conflitti. La scelta di tenere insieme “generazione, gravidanza-parto e nascita” esprime l’intento di mettere a fuoco l’evento nella sua interezza e di considerare tutti i soggetti coinvolti, il cui ruolo e rilevanza mutano in relazione alle forme di rappresentazione, risultando cruciali nel condizionare pratiche e principi deontologici. La storia è indagata nelle sue molteplici sfaccettature culturali, sociali, religiose, da cui discendono rituali e pratiche terapeutiche, norme religiose e civili, forme di potere e disciplinamento del corpo femminile. In questa prospettiva si rivela un capitolo cruciale della storia culturale, sociale e di genere, un osservatorio fondamentale per la storia delle donne, oltre che uno strumento indispensabile per capire la complessa realtà del presente.
